Making of the album cover

The mediums I used to make the cover were Blender and Photoshop. I made everything myself in Blender other than the hands, my skill level in 3D modeling is not high enough to make/rig realistic hands. I never took any classes or anything on 3D modeling, I have just begun my journey. If I can do it, you can too. Enjoy!

I wish I showed more of the making of the door but I forgot.

Since the whole album is based on the movie, The Last Man on Earth, my idea for the cover was the main character’s front door. I used a few references from the movie to keep track of all of the elements of the front of the house that would appear on the cover. If you haven’t seen the movie I would 100% recommend it. It is available to watch for free on Youtube since it is in the public domain. The Last Man on Earth is the first movie that was made of the book I am Legend.

Minecraft block headass house.

Here we have the beginning of the house and a really cursed looking garlic. Spoiler alert: I did not model an entire house since before I started I already had a vision for the ending shot I was going to use. If you are interested in learning more about Blender/3D modeling, there is a phenomenal guy on youtube, Blenderguru, he’s the goat.

mmmmmmmm nodes

I grabbed some textures for the wood of the crosses and applied them using nodes. In Blender, the hotkey for a principled texture setup is ctrl+shift+T+L+ratio just kidding it’s just ctrl+shift+T. The mirror was a big pain because I wanted it to be cracked. I was able to get nice spiderweb looking cracks as if someone had punched it but then I realized I would need an HDR for the mirror to reflect and that was above my abilities configuring. In hindsight though, I am happy with the way it turned out with me masking out the mirror in photoshop and using a picture I had as the reflection. Limitation breeds creativity or something like that.

Never trust a contractor.

Not too much to see here, just making some roof shingle things and more experimenting with nodes and textures.

Nacht der Untoten is the white bread of zombie maps.

By this point I was experimenting with the camera angle I was going to use for the final shot. The angle I wanted required another piece of the house being added. I’m not sure if in the movie he had a barricade here but I decided I wanted one there. A nice little nod to cod zombies 😉

B r a n c h e s

Home stretch now boys. I decided to try something while playing with the lighting. Had little to no impact on the final cover rip.

You gotta know when to hold them, Know when to fold them.

Here is one of the first “final shots” I took. When I imported and started moving the hands, they did this cool thing were they made everything see-through and it took me like an hour of searching for solutions online before I could fix it.

The final cover baby! I drew in some details on the hands, rotated and warped the whole thing, added a vignette, and some other assorted black magic to make it look like this. Thank you for looking and reading!
